The Department of Posts has issued a special commemorative stamp and cover to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Bellanwila Esala Perahera, in an initiative aimed at promoting stamp collecting.
The issuance ceremony was held at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, with the guidance of the temple’s Chief Incumbent, Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka Thera.
First held in 1950, the Bellanwila Esala Perahera has continued uninterrupted for 75 years. The newly issued stamp and cover feature creative designs inspired by the pageant’s heritage and the historic significance of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya.
The commemorative items were produced by the Stamp Bureau of the Sri Lanka Postal Department and officially presented to Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka Thera during the event.
