Sri Lanka has been internationally recognized as a country with one of the highest achievements in adhering to quality and proper breastfeeding practices, according to Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The Ministry of Health and Mass Media has declared August as National Breastfeeding Month. In line with this, the National Commemoration Ceremony and Advisory Workshop were held recently at Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla, under the patronage of Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

While World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from August 1 to 7, Sri Lanka has extended the awareness initiative throughout the month.

The event highlighted the importance of breastfeeding, reviewed the activities carried out during the month, facilitated knowledge sharing, and discussed the progress made in the past year. Health professionals who successfully implemented the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding were also recognized and awarded. Several other programs and awareness sessions were conducted as part of the celebration.
