These units will operate under the supervision of a Senior Deputy Inspector General, he said, adding that a special programme has also been launched to raise public awareness about crimes committed by police officers.
Dismissing claims of a crime wave in the country, Weerasooriya said such portrayals were misleading. He made these remarks at the inauguration of the Uva Provincial Crime Division.
The Acting IGP also alleged that activities of certain criminal gangs in recent times had received clear backing from some politicians.
