The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is considering disciplinary action against around 30 magistrates and district judges following a series of complaints and allegations against them.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is considering disciplinary action against around 30 magistrates and district judges following a series of complaints and allegations against them.
Over the past week, the JSC interdicted five judges, including Moratuwa District Judge Thilina Gamage and Monaragala Additional District Judge Ranjani Gamage. The other three were recent recruits to the judicial service, with one reportedly having contested elections without disclosing it prior to appointment.
The JSC said inquiries are initiated upon receiving complaints, with preliminary probes conducted if the complaint is anonymous. If the Commission decides to proceed, a charge sheet is issued, and a senior judge is appointed to hear the case.
Allegations against the judges include favouritism towards certain parties and conduct deemed damaging to the reputation of the judiciary.
