A large group of youth representing all districts across Sri Lanka are set to stage a mass protest today (6th) at 2:00 PM in front of the Maharagama Youth Services Council, alleging that youth societies have been heavily politicized.
The protest is being organized by the District-Level Youth Societies, who claim that the government is using the ongoing restructuring process of youth societies to include only individuals affiliated with the ruling party, sidelining impartial and active youth participants.
The demonstrators plan to present their concerns and demands to the responsible authorities and expect responses regarding these pressing issues.
A press conference was held yesterday (5th) in Colombo, where youth representatives from several districts voiced their concerns. They emphasized that the restructuring of youth societies is being manipulated for political gain and warned that such actions are unconstitutional and unjust.
According to organizers, the youth societies have over 300,000 active youth members spread across the island, who are engaged in community development, leadership training, and social service. Protesters insist that these platforms should remain non-political and inclusive, enabling fair representation and participation from all youth regardless of political affiliation.
