Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala announced that 15 Special Task Force (STF) teams of the Sri Lanka Police are currently engaged in continuous operations across the country to curb the recent surge in criminal activity and murders.
He emphasized that a series of comprehensive structural reforms are currently being implemented within the police department, aiming to provide the public with a reliable and high-quality police service.
The Minister stated that the government cannot turn a blind eye to the loss of human lives caused by underworld activities or shootings, and this is why these strong measures are now being taken.
He made these remarks while participating in the inauguration of the North Western Province Criminal Investigation Division, which was established at the Police Training Complex in Wehera, Kurunegala,
People who are unable to get justice for their complaints at local police stations can now submit their complaints directly to these newly established Provincial Crime Divisions, the Minister said. These divisions will also address complaints about crimes that have not been properly investigated by local police divisions.
The Minister further reiterated that the government had pledged from the beginning to establish the rule of law as a core foundation of a just society, and the police department must take the lead in this transformation. Therefore, the current structural reforms within the police are being carried out to fulfill that promise, he noted.
