A special traffic arrangement will be implemented in Kandy city starting today (30 July) in view of the annual Esala Perahera, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the Kandy Division, Anuruddha Bandaranayake.

During the period of the Perahera, entry of vehicles into the Kandy city limits will be restricted. The police have introduced alternative routes to ensure uninterrupted movement for the general public, SSP Bandaranayake stated.

This traffic plan will come into effect with the commencement of the first Kumbal Perahera and will continue until the conclusion of the final Randoli Perahera and the daytime Perahera that follows.

Alternative routes have been identified focusing on areas such as Katugastota, Nittawela Road near Vidyarathna School to Pushpadana Girls’ School, Lewella, Rathubokkkuwa, Peradeniya, and William Gopallawa Mawatha.

Additionally, the traffic police have taken steps to restrict vehicle parking within Kandy city during the Perahera period.

More than 6,000 security personnel, including members of the police and the tri-forces, have been deployed to ensure the safety of the event, SSP Bandaranayake further noted.
