A high-level Sri Lankan government delegation is scheduled to depart for the United States on Friday (July 18) to engage in critical negotiations aimed at reducing tariffs on Sri Lankan exports, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced today.
Speaking to the media following an official event held in Colombo, Minister Herath emphasized that the visit is a key component of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s export sector through improved trade terms.
“These negotiations are being fast-tracked ahead of the August 1 deadline. We are determined to secure additional tariff concessions that will benefit our exporters and help boost foreign revenue,” the Minister stated.
The upcoming discussions with U.S. officials are expected to cover a range of export categories, including apparel, rubber products, tea, and fisheries all sectors significantly impacted by current tariff structures.
The Foreign Minister expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the talks, noting that enhanced market access to the U.S. Sri Lanka’s single largest export destination would provide a much-needed boost to the national economy.
The delegation will include senior representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Commerce, and Export Development Board.
