Eight individuals have sustained serious injuries following a tragic accident in which a van plunged into a 70-foot precipice in the Despotwatta area, near the Nanu Oya roundabout on the Hatton-Nuwara Eliya main road.
The van was transporting a group of youths from Matara to Nuwara Eliya when it veered off the road and toppled down the steep slope. According to the Nanu Oya Police, preliminary investigations have revealed that the accident occurred as the driver had reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel.
Dramatic footage of the incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop, providing visual evidence of the van’s loss of control.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the incident.
