The World Bank has approved an additional USD 50 million in funding for Sri Lanka’s General Education Modernization Project, benefiting around 5 million students and 150,000 teachers nationwide.
This support aims to improve the quality of teaching, upgrade school infrastructure, and enhance student well-being, with a strong focus on under-served communities, including plantation areas and schools for children with special needs.
According to World Bank Regional Director Faris H. Hadad-Zervos, the initiative seeks to ensure every child in Sri Lanka can learn in a safe environment, and every teacher has the resources to support student growth.
The new funding will modernize in-service teacher training, expand digital learning, and promote student health through better access to clean water, sanitation, mental health services, and nutrition programs.
