Fairly strong winds between 30-40 kmph are expected over the western slopes of the central hills, and in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, as well as the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for several regions across Sri Lanka, warning of intermittent showers, possible thunderstorms, and strong winds expected to persist throughout the day.
According to the forecast, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces as well as in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts. Fairly heavy rainfall, estimated around 50mm, is likely in some areas within the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
In the Uva province and Ampara and Batticaloa districts, isolated showers or thundershowers are expected during the afternoon or night.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate potential damages caused by localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Marine Weather Forecast: Rough Seas and High Waves
Mariners and fishing communities have been cautioned about adverse sea conditions during the next 24 hours. Showers are expected in the sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Wind speeds may also reach 45–50 kmph in areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Kankasanthurai to Vakarai via Mullaittivu.
The sea will be rough at times in these regions, with wave heights rising to 2.0 – 3.0 meters especially off the coast from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota.
Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to remain alert and exercise caution when venturing into these waters.
