The Ministry of Agriculture today officially released the results of the National Animal Census conducted on March 15, revealing key wildlife population figures across Sri Lanka.
According to the report, the country is home to approximately 5.71 million elephants, 1.74 million monkeys, 4.24 million peacocks, and 2.26 million pheasants. Interestingly, the report also made mention of "cricket talent" — though it remains unclear whether this was a light-hearted reference or a data point.
Director of Agriculture Hemantha Amarasinghe stated that the census, which cost Rs. 2.7 million, was conducted to provide reliable data to support future wildlife management and environmental policy decisions.
