In conjunction with the global observance, the Government of Sri Lanka has declared a dedicated Environment Week, encouraging public engagement in conservation activities, educational campaigns, and community-driven green initiatives.
World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is the world’s largest platform for environmental public outreach. Celebrated every year on June 5 since 1973, the event aims to raise awareness and spur action for environmental protection.
This year’s global host is the Republic of Korea, and the 2025 theme focuses on promoting biodiversity, reducing pollution, and fostering global cooperation for a sustainable future.
Local activities planned throughout Environment Week include tree-planting drives, school-based environmental programs, waste reduction campaigns, and awareness walks organized across various districts.
Officials emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in tackling environmental issues, calling on citizens, industries, and policymakers to unite in preserving the country’s natural heritage.
