A section of the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya main road, a crucial transportation artery in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, has been partially closed near the Nanuoya area due to the heightened risk of landslides following a recent embankment collapse.
Authorities report that approximately 300 meters of the road are now limited to one-lane traffic after a large portion of the embankment above the road gave way, prompting concerns about potential further instability in the area.
The Sri Lanka Police and Disaster Management Centre have responded swiftly, cordoning off the affected section and deploying traffic control to ensure safe passage for motorists.
"We are closely monitoring the site. The soil remains saturated due to recent heavy rains, increasing the risk of further movement," a police spokesperson said. "Public safety is our top priority, and we urge drivers to proceed with caution and expect delays."
The Hatton–Nuwara Eliya route is heavily used by both local commuters and tourists, serving as a key link to scenic destinations in the central hills. With peak travel season approaching, local officials are coordinating with the Road Development Authority to assess the damage and expedite stabilization efforts.
