In a significant breakthrough in the fight against international drug trafficking, officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) and Sri Lanka Customs successfully intercepted a major cocaine smuggling operation at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today.
During a joint operation at the airport’s arrival terminal, authorities apprehended a 38-year-old Italian national shortly after his arrival in the country. Upon inspection of the suspect’s luggage, officers discovered a total of 10 kilograms and 323 grams of cocaine ingeniously concealed within three stuffed animal toys.
The meticulously planned concealment method highlights the evolving tactics employed by drug traffickers, but also the unwavering vigilance of Sri Lanka’s law enforcement agencies.
"This operation is a testament to the effective coordination and intelligence-sharing between the PNB and Sri Lanka Customs," said a senior official involved in the investigation. "We remain committed to protecting our borders and dismantling international narcotics networks."
The seized cocaine has an estimated street value running into millions of Sri Lankan Rupees, making it one of the most notable drug busts at BIA in recent times.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if the suspect is connected to a broader international drug syndicate. The suspect is currently in custody and will be presented before the Negombo Magistrate's Court.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying surveillance and enforcement efforts, particularly at key international entry points.
