In response to the emerging global threat posed by a new COVID-19 variant, the Ministry of Health has intensified its PCR testing efforts in selected hospitals across the country. This proactive measure aims to swiftly identify and isolate potential cases to prevent community transmission.
At a press briefing held today at the Health Ministry, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, stated that all hospitals equipped with PCR testing facilities have been placed on high alert. These institutions are now mandated to increase the frequency of testing and report suspected cases promptly.
“In light of the new variant circulating globally, we are strengthening our hospital-based surveillance systems,” Dr. Jasinghe said. “Hospitals with PCR capabilities have been instructed to enhance detection efforts, especially among patients presenting with symptoms such as fever.”
In addition to expanded testing, the Health Ministry has also issued directives to all medical institutions to closely monitor individuals admitted with fever or flu-like symptoms. The enhanced surveillance aims to catch early warning signs of a potential outbreak linked to the new strain.
Dr. Jasinghe emphasized that while the country has made significant strides in managing previous waves of the virus, continued vigilance is crucial. The Ministry is also urging the public to remain cautious, adhere to hygiene protocols, and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
