The Post and Telecommunication Officers’ Union (PTOU) has announced a 48-hour symbolic strike beginning at midnight today, in protest over delays in the recruitment process and a series of unresolved issues affecting union members.
According to PTOU President G.G.C. Niroshana, the union's decision follows repeated attempts to engage with authorities on 10 key demands, which include long-standing delays in hiring, unresolved promotions, and concerns over working conditions and employee rights.
“This strike is symbolic, but it carries a serious message. We are demanding that the authorities take immediate action to resolve the problems we have highlighted for months,” Niroshana said, addressing media earlier today.
The strike is expected to impact various postal and telecommunications services nationwide, although the union says essential services will be maintained during the strike period.
Among the union’s key concerns are:
Delays in the recruitment and appointment processes.
Lack of transparency in promotions.
Inadequate resources and staffing in several regional offices.
Issues relating to salary anomalies and overtime payments.
Union leaders have urged the government to open discussions before the end of the 48-hour period, warning that further trade union action could follow if no progress is made.
