The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory warning of intermittent showers and thundershowers over several provinces and districts across Sri Lanka in the next 24 hours, along with strong winds and rough sea conditions.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts. Some areas may experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm. Isolated showers are also possible in other parts of the island.
Wind Conditions:
Strong winds, reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, are likely over the western slopes of the central hills and across the Northern, North-Central, Southern, and North-Western provinces, including the Trincomalee and Monaragala districts.
Marine Weather Alert:
In sea areas around the island, showers or thundershowers are expected off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, while other regions may experience isolated rain. South-westerly winds are forecast, with speeds ranging from 40–50 kmph, possibly increasing to 60–70 kmph in sea areas off Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The sea in these regions is expected to be very rough, and wave heights may rise between 2.0 to 3.0 meters. Consequently, the public, especially fishing and naval communities, are strongly advised against venturing into these sea areas until further notice.
Safety Advisory:
The Meteorology Department also cautions of temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers, urging all maritime and coastal communities to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
