The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast warning of widespread showers or thundershowers expected across several parts of Sri Lanka today, with particular emphasis on the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, and Puttalam districts.
Showers are also likely in other parts of the country, particularly during the evening or night hours. Fairly heavy rainfall, around 75mm, is forecast in localized areas of Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, and in Galle, Matara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Mullaittivu districts.
Strong winds, ranging between 30 to 40 kmph, are expected at times in the North-western and Southern provinces. The public is urged to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Marine Weather Advisory: Rough Seas and Strong Winds
Sea areas around the island are also expected to experience showers or thundershowers. Winds over the seas will be westerly to south-westerly, with speeds of 30-40 kmph. However, gusts may intensify to 50-60 kmph in the sea regions off the coast from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
These coastal sea areas are forecast to be rough at times, while others will remain moderate. Swell waves could reach heights of 2.0–2.5 meters in sea zones from Kalutara to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota. Mariners are advised to exercise caution as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
The authorities request fishermen and coastal communities to remain alert and avoid venturing into potentially hazardous sea areas.
